<a href="http://littlebirdbistro.com/" target="_blank">Little Bird</a> is the sister restaurant of the famed <a href="http://lepigeon.com/" target="_blank">Le Pigeon</a>. Chef Gabriel Rucker won the James Beard Award this year for Best Chef: Northwest. I won the lottery by getting to have a wonderful lunch with my friend annyong! <br />

The space is so adorable and so very bistro-esque. Even though we were ordering up a storm, we couldn't resist the bread and salt-topped butter.<br />
<br />
Housemade pineapple soda ($3.50).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8755918833/" title="little bird 006a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="little bird 006a" height="500" src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3665/8755918833_315e0c2f85.jpg" width="375" /></a></div>
Yes, it's clear, but it was totally pineapple-y! Crazy!<br />
<br />
Foie gras torchon, rhubarb and muscat grappa gelee, hazelnut streusel ($17).<br />

Le Pigeon Burger and fries ($12).<br />

annyong highly recommended this burger, and we had a fabulous time sharing it and the marvelous fries. Really juicy and substantial.<br />
<br />
Baguette, jambon de paris, Gruyere, dijon, greens ($8).<br />

Delightfully simple yet delicious. So glad annyong and I traded halves!<br />

Bonus pics: annyong's adorable dog (too cute for words) and all three of us!<br />

I highly recommend you try <a href="http://nedluddpdx.com/" target="_blank">Ned Ludd</a> when you go to Portland. It is so fresh and delicious and warm and wonderful, and you'll feel so good and content when you're done with your meal.<br />
<br />
Out of all of our meals during these two trips, I'd say this one was most representative of Portland or, at least, what I think of when I think "Portland." The building looks somewhat warehouse-y, and galvanized tubs galore sit right in front, full of the very herbs and vegetables you're about to eat.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8755743934/" title="029a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="029a" height="320" src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3763/8755743934_dcc14d6c18_n.jpg" width="240" /></a><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8755751986/" title="005a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="005a" height="320" src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3703/8755751986_ea74a4e533_n.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8754619619/" title="030a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="030a" height="375" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7369/8754619619_dc430132c7.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8754692893/" title="028a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="028a" height="375" src="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5453/8754692893_e3f4ea0c10.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8754629887/" title="004a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="004a" height="320" src="http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2840/8754629887_209df57015_n.jpg" width="240" /></a><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8754621867/" title="026a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="026a" height="320" src="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5467/8754621867_6ce839c82f_n.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
A preponderance of dishes has some element prepared in a wood-burning oven, and even the rather rustic restroom is filled with wood. Drinks, like the nettle soda ($3) above, come in Mason jars.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://nedluddpdx.com/" target="_blank">Ned Ludd</a> is fancy lumberjack fare. It will absolutely delight your inner cosmopolitan Paul Bunyan. <br />
<br />
Miner’s lettuce, shaved carrot, pistachio, mint, yoghurt vinaigrette ($8).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8755751274/" title="008a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="008a" height="375" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8276/8755751274_1aa49f514d.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
Fantastic and refreshing. It tasted like it had just come out of a garden. Because it did.<br />
<br />
Sylvetta arugula, shaved bacon, pickled raisins, hazelnuts ($9).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8754627513/" title="010a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="010a" height="375" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7393/8754627513_bf3e54b7da.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
The best salad ever for meat lovers! Mr. Monkey said this should've been called "Amazing Bacon and Friends." Incredible.<br />
<br />
Pastured lamb, puntarella, sprouting broccoli, green olives, persillade ($19).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8755749774/" title="016a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="016a" height="640" src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3783/8755749774_ff5887e69b_z.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
Just glorious. The lamb was so tender, smoky, and luscious, and the greens paired perfectly.<br />
<br />
Crisp potatoes, spinach, fermented greens, nettle aioli ($9).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8754625801/" title="018a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="018a" height="375" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8121/8754625801_398ee52317.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
Argh, so yum. <a href="http://nedluddpdx.com/" target="_blank">Ned Ludd</a>'s oven and garden can do no wrong. That charred goodness. That beautiful greenery. Sigh.<br />
<br />
Game hen, carrots, pea tendrils, goat cheese, garlic chive ($17).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8755747936/" title="020a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="020a" height="375" src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3735/8755747936_6e63faaf9e.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
You know I go crazy for tiny fowl. The blackened bits. The succulent meat. I lost my mind. <a href="http://nedluddpdx.com/" target="_blank">Ned Ludd</a>'s oven is magical.<br />
<br />
White chocolate cremeaux, lemon marmalade, pistachio, lavender ($8).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8754622443/" title="024a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="024a" height="375" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7311/8754622443_a7faa561b5.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
This wasn't from the garden or the oven. Could <a href="http://nedluddpdx.com/" target="_blank">Ned Ludd</a> pull off dessert? Yes! A resounding yes! Slightly sweet. Slightly tart. Slightly nutty. Totally creamy and dreamy. <br />
<br />
Bravo, <a href="http://nedluddpdx.com/" target="_blank">Ned Ludd</a>. Thank you for a splendid Oregonian meal.</div>

And, yes, Mr. Monkey did get his usual complimentary Inner Circle snacks. If you squint really hard at the table next to the TV, you can see his beef jerky, Red Vines, mixed nuts, and ginger beer <br />
<br />
Our room was comfortable with a serene view of the Willamette River, and there were good strolling paths nearby. While not as conveniently located as <a href="http://www.weezermonkey.com/2013/05/practical-portland-pad-courtyard-by.html" target="_blank">The Courtyard</a> or the <a href="http://www.weezermonkey.com/2013/05/our-portland-palace-vintage-plaza-hotel.html" target="_blank">Vintage Plaza Hotel</a>, the <a href="http://RiverPlace Hotel" target="_blank">RiverPlace Hotel</a> is still a nice place to stay, just five to ten minutes away from desirable downtown destinations. In fact, some may prefer it for the peace and quiet.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">

Don't let the name of the place fool you -- it's a delectable daytime dining destination.<br />
<br />
The annyongs ordered the same two dishes we ordered, so that's why there are only three items below. <br />
<br />
Basket of pecan cinnamon rolls ($7).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8742670005/" title="006a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="006a" height="375" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7291/8742670005_106fda0b61.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
Warm, sticky, and sweet.<br />
<br />
Shrimp and grits -- sauteed shrimp, Merguez sausage, and two eggs any style served on grits with pan gravy ($12).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8742669529/" title="009a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="009a" height="375" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7288/8742669529_0979742f61.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
Southern comfort.<br />
<br />
Cast-iron fried chicken with bacon-pecan spoon bread and field greens dressed with maple syrup ($13).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8743786442/" title="010a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="010a" height="375" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7292/8743786442_6ed9a20ce2.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
Pretty satisfying.<br />
<br />
I wouldn't say that this meal knocked it out of the park, but you won't leave disappointed. The place is quite popular, so I imagine other dishes are strong, too.</div>

Lots of people really love <a href="http://grunerpdx.com/" target="_blank">Grüner</a> in Portland. We liked it but didn't love it.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8739816221/" title="gruner 001a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="gruner 001a" height="320" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7292/8739816221_5df741319c_n.jpg" width="240" /></a><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8740926978/" title="gruner 009a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="gruner 009a" height="320" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7294/8740926978_a5f30037af_n.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8740930880/" title="gruner 003a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="gruner 003a" height="375" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7286/8740930880_f3ae3c05c6.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8740924684/" title="gruner 020a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="gruner 020a" height="375" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7289/8740924684_949baba767.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
It's not <a href="http://grunerpdx.com/" target="_blank">Grüner</a>'s fault. We simply realized that German cuisine isn't at the top of our list. If you're looking for a good German meal, I don't think you can do much better than <a href="http://grunerpdx.com/" target="_blank">Grüner</a>. Well, unless you're in Germany or have a German grandma.<br />
<br />
Complimentary pretzel bread (and other bread) and butter.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8740927392/" title="gruner 008a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="gruner 008a" height="375" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7288/8740927392_0c4ed25825.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
We didn't even touch the regular bread. Why would we when we had that glorious braid on top?<br />
<br />
Crisp polenta croquettes stuffed with Raclette cheese ($5).<br />

Our first few bites were the best of the entire meal. Just read those ingredients. Just look at that golden glow. Five dollars bought a lot of happiness.<br />
<br />
Bacon-wrapped rabbit roulade filled with foie gras served with toasted brioche, raspberry mustard, pickled rhubarb, and pickled baby carrots ($14).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8740926556/" title="gruner 010a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="gruner 010a" height="375" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7281/8740926556_338a6495ce.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>

Given the foie gras ban back home, this was a no-brainer order for me. Solid.<br />
<br />
Quark spätzle, Edelweiss Black Forest ham, sauteed green garlic, asparagus, Crimini mushrooms, Fontina cheese, cream, chives, crisp shallots ($22).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8740925444/" title="gruner 017a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="gruner 017a" height="375" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7286/8740925444_62c309c9fb.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
Tasty...but not even close to being as tasty as Italian pasta. Unfair comparison perhaps, but it's the truth.<br />
<br />
Choucroute garnie -- bratwurst, saucisson, cider-braised pork belly, cured pork tenderloin, sauerkraut, sweet mustard, Yukon Gold potatoes ($26).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8740925062/" title="gruner 018a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="gruner 018a" height="375" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7287/8740925062_0d95a7f8e3.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
So traditional. So very German. Nice version.<br />
<br />
We were glad to have sampled <a href="http://grunerpdx.com/" target="_blank">Grüner</a>, but it's unlikely we'll ever return. You can do better when you're in Portland.</div>

We drove directly to <a href="http://tastyntasty.com/sons/" target="_blank">Tasty n Sons</a> after we landed in Portland. That's dedication, folks.<br />

This self-touted "Portland neighborhood restaurant" is enormously popular. Even at 2 p.m., we waited about 15 minutes for a table; I can only imagine the madness that occurs during prime dining hours. Nevertheless, it's a pleasant wait and one that's worth your while. We left our cell phone number with the hostess and took a delightful walk around the adorable block.<br />
<br />
Griddled bacon-wrapped dates with maple syrup and almonds ($2 each).<br />

Like candy! Magnificent giant candy for adults!<br />
<br />
Roasted apple with bacon lardons and cheddar ($5).<br />

Cheesy. Bacony. Applely. Nonsensical-word-inducingly good.<br />
<br />
Chocolate potato doughnut with crème anglaise ($1.50 each).<br />

You will turn into Homer Simpson when you bite into this hot little ball, drool and all.<br />
<br />
Potatoes bravas with over easy eggs and aioli ($7).<br />

Burmese red pork stew with short grain rice and eggs two ways ($10).<br />

A fan favorite with good reason. Sweet and salty and mix it all up with that egg? One warm bowl of happy comfort.<br />
<br />
What could make this meal even better? Even with beverages and tip, we only paid $41 for all of this. Man, I love Portland. It's like going to another country with a great exchange rate.</div>

We returned to Portland in April to celebrate my birthday.<br />

This time, we had a free room at the <a href="http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/pdxpc-courtyard-portland-city-center/" target="_blank">Courtyard by Marriott City Center</a> because of Mr. Monkey's previous Marriott stays. I don't know how he does it. We get so many deals.<br />

This was the nicest room I'd ever had at a Courtyard by Marriott.<br />

It didn't hurt that we were on the top floor in a huge corner room.<br />

Yay for free! Even if it weren't free, this was an excellent, economical, and convenient place to stay. Walking distance to a lot of good downtown eating!</div>

You've probably heard of <a href="http://www.pokpokpdx.com/" target="_blank">Pok Pok</a>. Rave after rave after rave sort of scared me. Sure, the chef won a James Beard Award, but...Northern Thai by a white guy? Color me skeptical. Maybe even worried. You know how I get about mangled Asian food.<br />
<br />
Would the welcoming cat's raised left paw (and Mr. Monkey's following suit) bring us luck? <br />

My friend <a href="http://www.nannersp.com/" target="_blank">Nanette</a> assured me the place was legit delish. We met her family for lunch. While the restaurant doesn't have a children's menu, it does have high-chairs and booster seats. Bring your well-behaved tots with daring appetites! Little Em was an absolute angel during our meal! Bravo to <a href="http://www.nannersp.com/" target="_blank">Nanette</a>'s excellent parenting!<br />

Naam krachiap -- Thai-style iced hisbiscus drink ($3.50).<br />

Smoky and garlicky meat, meat, meat. What's not to like?<br />
<br />
Phat si ew -- fresh local wide rice noodles, Carlton Farms pork, Chinese broccoli, egg, and black soy sauce stir-fried in a smoking hot wok ($9.50).<br />

Hey, the kid had to eat something. Skip if you're not with a kid. You can get a ton of more interesting stuff.<br />
<br />
Ike's spicy Vietnamese fish sauce wings -- half dozen fresh whole natural chicken wings marinated in fish sauce and sugar, deep fried, tossed in caramelized Phu Quoo fish sauce and garlic and served with Vietnamese table salad ($13.95).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8713531076/" title="DSC_1071a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_1071a" height="640" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8253/8713531076_982650e0fe_z.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
The #1 reason to visit <a href="http://Pok Pok" target="_blank">Pok Pok</a>! They are giant and spicy and finger-lickin' fantastic. They live up to the hype. I am a believer. Praise the wings. Amen.<br />
<br />
Sunny's yam wun sen -- spicy and sour glass noodle salad with naem (housemade sour pork sausage), ground pork, Chinese celery, pickled garlic, Thai chilies, shallots, and carrot with lime, fish sauce, garlic oil dressing ($12.50).<br />

Tangy and packed with porkiness. Mmm.<br />
<br />
Papaya pok pok -- spicy green papaya salad with tomatoes, long beans, Thai chili, lime juice, tamarind, fish sauce, garlic, palm sugar, dried shrimp, and peanuts made to order in a pok pok (mortar and pestle) ($8.95).<br />

If you're a longtime reader, you know I don't like papaya salad, but we couldn't go to <a href="http://www.pokpokpdx.com/" target="_blank">Pok Pok</a> and not order the pok pok, right? Objectively speaking, this was an excellent version.<br />
<br />
Pok pok affogato -- condensed milk ice cream drowned in a shot of Vietnamese coffee served with a Chinese fried donut ($7.50).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8712403641/" title="DSC_1083a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_1083a" height="640" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8265/8712403641_4368d651c3_z.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
An Asian place with good desserts! What's next? A unicorn in the bathroom?<br />
<br />
Coconut ice cream sandwich -- coconut-jackfruit ice cream served on a sweet bun with peanuts, sweet sticky rice, condensed milk, and chocolate syrup ($7).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">

You guys. YOU GUYS. OMG. WHUT. Yeah. This happened. Crazy. Awesome.<br />
<br />
I was wary, but I fell in love with those wings. You will, too. </div>

<a href="http://voodoodoughnut.com/" target="_blank">Voodoo Doughnut</a> is a Portland institution, but, as we all know, institutions aren't always purveyors of a city's best food. Nevertheless, most of the time, a line snakes out of <a href="http://voodoodoughnut.com/" target="_blank">Voodoo Doughnut</a>.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8708805787/" title="DSC_1009a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_1009a" height="640" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8414/8708805787_ddb1113658_z.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
Believe it or not, we still had room to eat after <a href="http://www.weezermonkey.com/2013/05/communal-feasting-beast.html" target="_blank">our dinner at Beast</a>, so we headed to <a href="http://voodoodoughnut.com/" target="_blank">Voodoo Doughnut</a> with our new young doppelganger friends.<br />
<br />
Lucky for all of us, the line was pretty short. There's no way I'd wait in the lines we saw during the day.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8709927032/" title="DSC_1024a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_1024a" height="331" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8394/8709927032_0c7eb27cd5.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>

Especially now that I've tasted the donuts.<br />
<br />
At least some of them were cute? At least they made for fun photos? At least our new friends treated us? (So nice, those kids!)<br />
<br />
Our new sidekicks got a Tex-Ass Challenge (a giant doughnut equivalent to six doughnuts) and The Loop for themselves.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8709924770/" title="DSC_1030a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_1030a" height="331" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8133/8709924770_5406b10e6f.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
They were such sweethearts and bought us our giant box of donuts to thank us for driving them around. We meet the coolest people!<br />
<br />
After we dropped our dinner companions off at their hotel, we headed back to our own room to sample our pink box offerings.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8709924176/" title="DSC_1033a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_1033a" height="331" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8548/8709924176_972d0673fe.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>

<br />
The Loop -- raised yeast doughnut with vanilla frosting and Froot Loops.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">

So adorable but so disappointing! The loops had lost all of their crunch. The doughnut was limp.<br />
<br />
Voodoo Doll -- <span class="wt2w"><span class="wt2w">raised yeast doughnut filled with raspberry jelly topped with chocolate frosting and a pretzel stake.</span></span><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">

WTF? This was supposed to look like the <a href="http://Voodoo Doughnut" target="_blank">Voodoo Doughnut</a> logo. Go scroll up and look at the neon sign at the top of this post. FAIL.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="wt2w">McMinnville Cream -- </span><span class="wt2w"><span class="wt2w">raised yeast doughnut filled with Bavarian cream with maple frosting on top and two eyeballs and a mustache.</span></span></div>

This li'l guy got a tad mangled in the box, but I still thought he was so cute. This doughnut was decent.<br />
<br />
Bacon Maple Bar --<span class="wt2w"><span class="wt2w">raised yeast doughnut with maple frosting and bacon on top.</span></span><br />

Best doughnut in the box. It was the only one that we actually finished. The truth is we ate only one or two bites of the others.<br />
<br />
<span class="wt2w"><span class="wt2w">Cock-N-Balls -- raised yeast doughnut triple filled with Bavarian cream and topped with chocolate frosting.</span></span><br />

Ok. I got this one just to photograph it. It was filled with cream, people. So gross. So funny.<br />
<br />
Maple Blazer Blunt -- <span class="wt2w"><span class="wt2w">raised yeast doughnut rolled into a

Great photo op (complete with the Kimpton hotel chain's signature animal-print robe). Terrible taste. Dry. Blech.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://voodoodoughnut.com/" target="_blank">Voodoo Doughnut</a> is not really worth a visit unless you go with new foodie friends who treat when the line is short. The doughnuts really don't impress.</div>

We were excited to try <a href="http://beastpdx.com/" target="_blank">Beast</a> because we'd heard so many good things about it. It didn't hurt that Chef Naomi Pomeroy had been on <i>Top Chef Masters</i> and was a James Beard Award finalist.<br />
<br />
Maybe our expectations were too high. Maybe it was an off day. While the food at <a href="http://beastpdx.com/" target="_blank">Beast</a> was very good, it just didn't blow us away like <a href="http://www.weezermonkey.com/2013/05/late-bird-gets-awesomeness-aviary.html" target="_blank">our dinner at Aviary did the night before</a>.<br />

<a href="http://beastpdx.com/" target="_blank">Beast</a> is small. There are two dinner seatings each night, Wednesday through Saturday, and all dining is communal. What does this mean exactly? It means you have to eat with strangers, much to our dismay. I'm not sure why the restaurant makes no mention of this on its website.<br />
<br />
Well, I'll tell you about this communal dining here. You'll be at a big table with a bunch of other people for your entire $75 six-course meal. If this isn't your idea of fun, I recommend skipping <a href="http://beastpdx.com/" target="_blank">Beast</a>.<br />
<br />
But, if you can stomach the idea of dining with unknown companions for a fairly long meal, welcome. Lucky for us, we quickly became friends with the young couple to our right. They were like mini versions of ourselves -- Asian, Californian, 10 years younger, and hungry for food and fun. Thank goodness for our little doppelgangers because the people to our left sucked.<br />
<br />
Heirloom cauliflower soup, leek and horseradish mousse, sake-cured trout roe and crisp rye toast.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8708954220/" title="DSC_0968a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0968a" height="331" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8406/8708954220_d68cdd0fce.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
Pleasant start, although it wasn't very flavorful except for the roe.<br />
<br />
Charcuterie plate: foie gras bon-bon, Sauternes gelée, chicken liver mousse, leaf lard cracker, steak tartare, quail egg toast, rustic pork terrine, pork sausage en croûte, duck rillettes and tête de cochon.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8707829529/" title="DSC_0974a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0974a" height="640" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8553/8707829529_4ffaf3334d_z.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8707828669/" title="DSC_0980a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0980a" height="331" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8416/8707828669_dd8dea9cce.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
This plate of goodies was pretty impressive. I saved the foie gras for last, of course.<br />
<br />
Intermezzo.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8708950490/" title="DSC_0982a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0982a" height="640" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8414/8708950490_7bd585f438_z.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
Palate-cleansing sorbet. Not much more to report. <br />
<br />
Fennel-brined poussin presse, caramelized gil-feathered turnips, peacock kale, herbed foie gras butter, porcinis, duck and rabbit jus.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8708949670/" title="DSC_0988a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0988a" height="640" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8407/8708949670_4c73877482_z.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
Pretty good chicken made even better with foie gras butter. But it was still just chicken.<br />
<br />
Square Peg Farm's catalogna emerald dandelion, Northern-Spy apples, crispy prosciutto, brown butter vinaigrette.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8707826291/" title="DSC_0997a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0997a" height="640" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8120/8707826291_7f953bf3c9_z.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
I wish I could tell you that this salad was out of this world, but I can't. It was tasty enough. Definitely fresh. But nothing special.<br />
<br />
Selection of cheeses from Steve at Cheese Bar, fresh quince paste, fried Marcona almonds, bee pollen shortbread, wildflower honey.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8707825429/" title="DSC_1001a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_1001a" height="331" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8120/8707825429_d35ac40c95.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
I can't lie. I like cheese, but I'm always disappointed when it's a course during a multi-course meal. Perhaps this makes me gauche.<br />
<br />
Bandon cranberry clafoutis, brown sugar-crème fraîche ice cream, candied ginger and walnut crumble.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8707824463/" title="DSC_1003a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_1003a" height="331" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8537/8707824463_c1c4ea1c18.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8708946408/" title="DSC_1004a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_1004a" height="640" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8130/8708946408_ea9273ea76_z.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
A candle for Mr. Monkey's birthday! Now this was quite a good dessert, and I'm a salty girl. Crumble gets me every time. Nummy.<br />
<br />
If you're looking for intimate private dining, don't go to Beast. If not, I guess $75 is a pretty swell deal for six courses, even when one course is just cheese.</div>

We had a late dinner at <a href="http://www.aviarypdx.com/" target="_blank">Aviary</a> our first night in Portland. It kinda knocked our socks off. This remains my favorite meal in Portland to date. <br />
<div style="text-align: center;">

<a href="http://www.aviarypdx.com/" target="_blank">Aviary</a> disproves the old saying, "Too many cooks spoil the broth." Three co-chefs -- Sarah Pliner, Jasper Shen, and Kat Whitehead -- combine their extensive New York (Ducasse, Aquavit, Jean Georges, Tabla, Aldea, 5 Ninth) and Portland (The Heathman, Giorgio's, Couvron) experience to bring you exquisite dishes without pretense.<br />
<br />
This is NYC-quality with Portland pricing and freshness. In other words, it's a dream come true.<br />
<br />
Housemade sodas.<br />

Very bubbly. Very refreshing. Not too sweet.<br />
<br />
Charred octopus, scallion pancakes, green papaya, long beans, cashews ($15).<br />

Smoky and tender paired with fresh and crisp to make bright and tasty.<br />
<br />
Duck confit, salted black beans, figs, fennel ($17).<br />

Gloriously salty and juicy with just the right amount of sticky and sweet.<br />
<br />
Crispy pig ear, coconut rice, Chinese sausage, avocado ($15).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8692050958/" title="DSC_0814a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0814a" height="640" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8125/8692050958_f593937e40_z.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
Oh. My. God. This is the dish to get. This is everything in one hot mini wok. This is happiness and comfort on a late Friday night.<br />
<br />
Buttermilk panna cotta, mango, passion fruit sorbet, fennel crisp ($6).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8690930213/" title="DSC_0820a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0820a" height="640" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8544/8690930213_3c04826837_z.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
Tangy and creamy and how-is-this-only-$6?!<br />
<br />
Cardamom rice pudding, cashews, pomegranate, saffron gelee ($6).<br />

When this arrived at our table, I got really worried. It reminded me of the ridiculous concoctions that my seven-year-old niece makes at Yogurtland (not good, folks, not good). But you know what? It worked. It worked so incredibly well that I scraped every little bit out of the bowl. I guess sometimes a combination of all the flavors and textures you can think of actually succeeds.<br />
<br />
Don't miss <a href="http://www.aviarypdx.com/" target="_blank">Aviary</a>. Put it on your list when you go to Portland.</div>

Mr. Monkey lived in Portland for three years. The city has a very special place in his crunchy heart, so we went there for his birthday in November. We stayed at the <a href="http://www.vintageplaza.com/" target="_blank">Vintage Plaza Hotel</a> for $137 per night.<br />

Located in the heart of downtown Portland, the <a href="http://www.vintageplaza.com/" target="_blank">Vintage Plaza Hotel</a> is quite the convenient home away from home.<br />
<br />
The hotel upgraded us to the luxury suite because we are Inner Circle members and because it was Mr. Monkey's birthday. This was the top floor.<br />

<a href="http://www.weezermonkey.com/2013/04/broken-instrument.html" target="_blank">My broken camera</a> notwithstanding, it's been a good month. After all, I did get a new point-and-shoot, and I do celebrate my birthday as long as I can. We had a child-friendly dinner with my little niece and nephew on my actual birthday, but we headed to <a href="http://allumettela.com/" target="_blank">Allumette</a> for a five-course tasting ($72) the day after with the Cruisers. Thank you, Cruisers!<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8639886624/" title="allumette 033a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="allumette 033a" height="375" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8546/8639886624_c1d72b1abd.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<a href="http://allumettela.com/" target="_blank">Allumette</a> replaces <a href="http://www.weezermonkey.com/2010/03/testing-waters-at-allston-yacht-club.html" target="_blank">Allston Yacht Club</a> in Echo Park. Same owners. Different concept. Better experience.<br />
<br />
Housemade limeade and ginger beer ($4 each).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8639889126/" title="allumette 004a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="allumette 004a" height="320" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8111/8639889126_64116a8fb2_n.jpg" width="240" /></a><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8639888786/" title="allumette 005a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="allumette 005a" height="320" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8393/8639888786_b382c8543b_n.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
Both fresh and strong.<br />
<br />
Complimentary grilled focaccia with potato-mascarpone butter.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8639888538/" title="allumette 007a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="allumette 007a" height="375" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8254/8639888538_c003af71fd.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
This may be the tastiest bread course in Los Angeles at this moment. Spread that creamy, buttery, cheesy potato goodness all over the focaccia and crunch and savor and sigh contentedly.<br />
<br />
Kanpachi sashimi, spot prawn, oro blanco, pistachio oil.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8638784231/" title="allumette 012a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="allumette 012a" height="375" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8115/8638784231_121da95a2b.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
A little tart. A little nutty. A lot of fresh. A lot of yum.<br />
<br />
Complimentary prawn head broth.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8638784025/" title="allumette 013a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="allumette 013a" height="375" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8532/8638784025_267c07f6b8.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
We wanted to pick this up and slurp it all and suck all the juice from that head. Ok, we committed one of these acts. I'll let you guess which one.<br />
<br />
Poached octopus, beluga lentil, vadouvan butter, fried egg.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8638783833/" title="allumette 016a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="allumette 016a" height="375" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8397/8638783833_a8475d5002.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
Tender and gently chewy, paired wonderfully with rich, runny yolk on top of mild, delicate legumes.<br />
<br />
Complimentary fairy squid, cilantro flower, lime ponzu.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8639887544/" title="allumette 019a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="allumette 019a" height="375" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8520/8639887544_6bfee3d39d.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
So tiny and pretty! Tasted like it looked, if that makes any sense.<br />
<br />
Alaskan halibut, king crab mezzaluna, Meyer lemon, whipped yogurt.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8638783367/" title="allumette 021a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="allumette 021a" height="375" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8532/8638783367_d096111010.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
The best halibut I've had in quite awhile. Halibut is often overcooked and dry. Not here. Not at all. How was this simultaneously moist and flaky? I don't know, but it was delectable with its cool and slightly sweet and sour accompaniments.<br />
<br />
Squab breast, rillette fricassee, balsamic panade, blueberry.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8638783015/" title="allumette 026a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="allumette 026a" height="375" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8388/8638783015_36828d29ea.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
You know I always love my tiny fowl. Rejoice! An itty-bitty bird in a happy garden!<br />
<br />
Goat's milk flan, angel food cake, brown butter, tapioca.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8691057337/" title="allumette 027a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="allumette 027a" height="375" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8398/8691057337_8d74fb8a78.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
Birthday candle fun! I loved loved loved this dessert, and I'm not even a huge flan fan. Delicate and not too sweet. Fabulous way to end a nice dinner with good friends. I dare say that <a href="http://allumettela.com/" target="_blank">Allumette</a> is sort of like a chill, unflashy <a href="http://www.weezermonkey.com/2012/01/high-voltage-tasting-ink.html">ink.</a>, Jr. That's a compliment.<br />
<br />
My point-and-shoot handled the low lighting like a champ. Happy birthday indeed.</div>

My camera is broken. I am sad about it. I haven't gotten it fixed yet. I've been too lazy to go to the store again.<br />
<br />
I went when my camera first broke, and the camera guy suggested that I go home and find my proof of purchase, so I wouldn't have to pay for repairs. Of course, when I went home and searched for my documentation, I discovered the warranty was no good anymore. It's going to cost $300-$400 to fix my camera and another trip to the store. And then it's going to take another month for the store to send it to the people who actually fix cameras.<br />
<br />
I'm unmotivated to start this whole process.<br />
<br />
I bought a new point-and-shoot camera. It's pretty good. I like it.<br />
<br />
It's weird taking pictures with just a point-and-shoot, though. I miss holding a gigantic camera.<br />
<br />
But, apparently, I don't miss holding a gigantic camera enough to drive to the store and bring my broken gigantic camera to get it fixed for $300-$400.<br />
<br />
I still snap a lot of photos. Where are they? Trapped on SD cards. Shelved away in haphazardly labeled folders on my laptop. Hidden. Unused. Nowhere.<br />
<br />
Old habits die hard. I still feel compelled to record everything, even if I don't publish.</div>

I'm not done with Las Vegas posts yet. It's time to dig out some gems that were sitting around while I was on hiatus.<br />
<br />
Has my title intrigued you? I can't say that <a href="http://www.saipinchutima.com/" target="_blank">Lotus of Siam</a> is the best Thai restaurant in North America (because I haven't had Thai food all over North America), but <a href="http://www.saveur.com/article/Travels/Vegas-Lotus-of-Siam-Restaurant" target="_blank">a Pulitzer Prize-winning food critic has made this bold claim</a>.<br />
<br />
Don't let the crappy strip mall and humble interior fool you.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8593696987/" title="lotus of siam 055a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="lotus of siam 055a" height="331" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8089/8593696987_b093967331.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8593697459/" title="lotus of siam 054a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="lotus of siam 054a" height="331" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8392/8593697459_7d7e7e6649.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
We had the best Thai food that we've had in recent memory here.<br />
<br />
Lime drink ($2.75), Thai iced tea ($2.50), Thai iced coffee ($2.50).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8594800970/" title="lotus of siam 033a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="lotus of siam 033a" height="320" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8246/8594800970_7120479240_n.jpg" width="212" /></a><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8593697891/" title="lotus of siam 052a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="lotus of siam 052a" height="320" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8376/8593697891_9006f66bd5_n.jpg" width="212" /></a></div>
The lime drink was tart and fresh. The Thai iced tea and coffee were sweet and strong.<br />
<br />
Nam kao tod -- crispy rice mixed with minced sour sausage, green onion, fresh chili, ginger, peanuts, and lime juice ($7.95). <br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8593700277/" title="lotus of siam 035a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="lotus of siam 035a" height="331" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8515/8593700277_e214dcdb01.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
We'd never had anything like this before. It was crispy and salty and meaty and tangy and refreshing and wonderful! Are you sold? You should be!<br />
<br />
Soft shell crab salad -- deep-fried soft shell crab, fresh chili, lime juice, peanuts, and vegetables on a bed of sliced cabbage ($18.95).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8594799654/" title="lotus of siam 042a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="lotus of siam 042a" height="331" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8513/8594799654_8f7b170c48.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
If we see soft shell crab salad on a menu, we get it! What a great version this was!<br />
<br />
Hor mok sea bass -- steamed sea bass cooked in its own juice, egg, sliced cabbage, coconut milk and curry sauce ($28.95).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8594799196/" title="lotus of siam 045a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="lotus of siam 045a" height="331" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8234/8594799196_d77822d2f8.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
Super fish! Who knew that sea bass wrapped in foil could be so special? Tender, creamy, and perfectly spiced.<br />
<br />
Crispy duck drunken noodles -- crispy duck topped with fresh chili and Thai basil served on top of pan-fried flat rice noodles ($21.95).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8593698361/" title="lotus of siam 047a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="lotus of siam 047a" height="331" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8101/8593698361_33f6d8c614.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
Yay for duck! Yay for rice noodles! Yay for kick! Yay! Yay! Yay! Best!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.saipinchutima.com/" target="_blank">Lotus of Siam</a> is well worth leaving the The Strip. Cabbies know it well. Go.</div>

Sometimes all you want is bar food, and, when that bar food is has some British flair, you have...pub fare! <a href="http://www.publichouselv.com/" target="_blank">Public House</a> at The Venetian fulfills all your hangover needs deliciously and with style.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8590979643/" title="public house 022a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="public house 022a" height="159" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8510/8590979643_ebbec4f2ff_m.jpg" width="240" /></a><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8592082692/" title="public house 021a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="public house 021a" height="159" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8096/8592082692_f6f84b1daf_m.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8592084848/" title="public house 017a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="public house 017a" height="331" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8100/8592084848_50ae47a7d9.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8590981653/" title="public house 018a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="public house 018a" height="331" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8522/8590981653_527cd513f3.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8592083352/" title="public house 020a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="public house 020a" height="640" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8239/8592083352_6952dd8aee_z.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
Want to drink some more? More beer and wine than you can shake a stick at!<br />
<br />
Poutine -- French fries, braised oxtail, cheese curd, gravy, fried egg ($12.50).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8590984015/" title="public house 009a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="public house 009a" height="331" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8096/8590984015_8180fdff0d.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
Best thing we had during the meal. Golden, fried, meaty, cheesy, eggy heaven.<br />
<br />
Pork belly, baguette, apple-fennel slaw, cider aioli, fries ($14).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8590983513/" title="public house 012a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="public house 012a" height="640" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8371/8590983513_13d4cf1f7d_z.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
This reminded me a little of <a href="http://www.weezermonkey.com/2012/03/premium-po-boys-parkway-bakery-and.html" target="_blank">po' boys at Parkway Bakery</a> (even though it was a different meat), and you know that we loved those po' boys. Loved. Really awesome sandwich.<br />
<br />
Buttermilk fried quail, waffle, bacon-braised Swiss chard, "moose drool" maple glaze ($26).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8590983011/" title="public house 013a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="public house 013a" height="640" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8373/8590983011_7525d44109_z.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
The quail was delectable. The Swiss chard was fantastic. The waffles sucked. Unfortunate.<br />
<br />
Quality meal for a decent price. Solid and good for groups! Woohoo!<br />
<br />
Bonus pic.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8592081418/" title="public house 026a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="public house 026a" height="640" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8109/8592081418_4a55748dfe_z.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
The flowers between The Venetian and The Palazzo are always gorgeous.<br />
<br />
And that was our March Madness weekend (of eating).</div>

Long ago, when I was in law school, <a href="http://www.jaleo.com/" target="_blank">Jaleo</a> was my absolute favorite restaurant in D.C. Even on my worst days, those tapas could turn my frown upside-down.<br />
<br />
This was way before I adopted gluttony as a hobby (and when my dress size was still a single digit). It was 2001, and I had no idea who José Andrés was.<br />
<br />
All I knew was that there was something magical in those patatas bravas, and I felt so lucky that I could walk to <a href="http://www.jaleo.com/" target="_blank">Jaleo</a> from school.<br />
<br />
There's no better place to feel lucky than Las Vegas. We got lucky on Saturday at <a href="http://www.jaleo.com/las-vegas" target="_blank">Jaleo at The Cosmopolitan</a>.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8590845905/" title="jaleo 039a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="jaleo 039a" height="331" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8233/8590845905_fb5ec28f0a.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8591947820/" title="jaleo 037a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="jaleo 037a" height="331" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8093/8591947820_46a5c39ac8.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8591948368/" title="jaleo 034a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="jaleo 034a" height="331" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8240/8591948368_b2325179d6.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8590851315/" title="jaleo 011a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="jaleo 011a" height="331" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8246/8590851315_b715af2a4f.jpg" width="500" /></a> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8590852573/" title="jaleo 006a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="jaleo 006a" height="640" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8368/8590852573_084b81383a_z.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
Even Mr. Monkey got a bit nostalgic about our meals of yesteryear. He was a fan of <a href="http://www.jaleo.com/" target="_blank">Jaleo</a> back in the day, too.<br />
<br />
Datiles con tocino "como hace todo el mundo" -- fried dates wrapped in bacon ($10).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8590851745/" title="jaleo 007a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="jaleo 007a" height="640" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8106/8590851745_e39209b1f7_z.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
Still incredible after all these years. Still our favorite little golden sweet and salty bites.<br />
<br />
Sopa de ajo -- garlic soup with black garlic and egg 63 degrees ($10).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8591952218/" title="jaleo 014a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="jaleo 014a" height="331" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8510/8591952218_f686819462.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8590850397/" title="jaleo 016a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="jaleo 016a" height="331" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8524/8590850397_232797c1c0.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
People! This soup is made of garlic! Slurp it up, y'all!<br />
<br />
Empanadillas de brandada de bacalao -- "empanada" of cod brandade with honey ($10).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8590849967/" title="jaleo 019a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="jaleo 019a" height="640" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8234/8590849967_c10e4e483c_z.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
Like a fancy crab rangoon but with cod in liquid form. Unexpected and fun!<br />
<br />
Espinacas a la catalana -- sauteed spinach, pine nuts, raisins, and apples ($12).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8591950920/" title="jaleo 022a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="jaleo 022a" height="640" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8511/8591950920_e8eb7d34ea_z.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
Another <a href="http://www.jaleo.com/" target="_blank">Jaleo</a> classic. Just had to get my fave veggies of old.<br />
<br />
Codorniz a la Catalana -- grilled whole quail with apple puree and pine nuts ($15).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8591950030/" title="jaleo 027a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="jaleo 027a" height="640" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8099/8591950030_c29ee9ddf8_z.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8590849117/" title="jaleo 025a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="jaleo 025a" height="640" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8505/8590849117_40952ec074_z.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
Is that quail sexy or what? Its crossed legs say, "Come hither."<br />
<br />
Rossejat -- traditional paella of fried pasta with fresh squid and shrimp ($18).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8590848235/" title="jaleo 028a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="jaleo 028a" height="640" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8373/8590848235_4341c38dfb_z.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
Comfort in a giant pan. Maybe even more garlicky than the sopa de ajo. And that's good.<br />
<br />
Canelones tradicionales de cerdo y higado de pato con salsa bechamel -- pork and foie gras canelones with Béchamel sauce ($14).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8591948958/" title="jaleo 033a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="jaleo 033a" height="331" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8245/8591948958_3eb59d71a9.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
Creamy heaven, but my only complaint is that it was hard to taste the foie with all the cheese and pork. Feature the foie!<br />
<br />
I heart <a href="http://www.jaleo.com/" target="_blank">Jaleo</a>. Forever and always.</div>

<a href="http://www.cosmopolitanlasvegas.com/taste/restaurant-collection/estiatorio-milos.aspx" target="_blank">Estiatorio Milos at The Cosmopolitan</a> has one of the best lunch deals on The Strip -- three courses for $22.13. Mr. Monkey and one of his besties took a break from March Madness to indulge me.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8584208319/" title="estiatorio milos 026a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="estiatorio milos 026a" height="331" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8527/8584208319_92e2ca8714.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8585307300/" title="estiatorio milos 022a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="estiatorio milos 022a" height="331" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8380/8585307300_dbf79793a9.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8585307182/" title="estiatorio milos 023a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="estiatorio milos 023a" height="331" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8378/8585307182_c075f60890.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8584209023/" title="estiatorio milos 005a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="estiatorio milos 005a" height="331" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8390/8584209023_6949b89d64.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
The space is luxurious but comfortable, and the complimentary grilled wheat sourdough with olive oil set the delicious tone for the rest of the meal.<br />
<br />
Course 1A: Canadian Classic -- Willy Krauch Nova Scotia smoked salmon, cream cheese, red onion, and St-Viateur bagel from Montreal.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8585307878/" title="estiatorio milos 006a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="estiatorio milos 006a" height="331" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8227/8585307878_726d8b74c8.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
Our friend ordered this and impressed us with his meticulous lox and bagel construction skills. He seemed happy with his appetizer.<br />
<br />
Course 1B: grilled octopus -- sashimi-quality Mediterranean octopus, charcoal-broiled ($10 supplement).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8585307814/" title="estiatorio milos 007a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="estiatorio milos 007a" height="331" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8241/8585307814_65e0de3a9e.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
Charred just enough and infused with a wondrous smokiness. We all agreed this was the best appetizer.<br />
<br />
Course 1C: fresh Maryland lump crab cake with marinated gigantes beans and mustard emulsion ($10 supplement).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8585307766/" title="estiatorio milos 009a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="estiatorio milos 009a" height="331" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8237/8585307766_2e6f7c7ee0.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
Enjoyable but a far cry from the octopus. I wish there had been more than just four bites.<br />
<br />
Course 2A: Nova Scotia deep sea lobster pasta with light tomato sauce ($15 supplement).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8584208739/" title="estiatorio milos 013a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="estiatorio milos 013a" height="640" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8229/8584208739_9b4b85cbd3_z.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8585307430/" title="estiatorio milos 015a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="estiatorio milos 015a" height="331" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8379/8585307430_8cf70e428c.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
Our friend and I both ordered this dish, and the presentation really wowed us. It was huge! There was no skimping on the lobster; there was a full tail, full claws, and additional bits. Nicely done.<br />
<br />
Course 2B: Colorado USDA Prime lamb chops, French fries, broccoli ($10 supplement).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8584208793/" title="estiatorio milos 012a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="estiatorio milos 012a" height="331" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8108/8584208793_c41991a4eb.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
While the lobster pasta delighted me, I liked this lamb even more. Man. I love Greek lamb. Mr. Monkey actually picked up the bone and gnawed. You think I'm kidding.<br />
<br />
Dessert -- yogurt martini.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8585307372/" title="estiatorio milos 020a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="estiatorio milos 020a" height="640" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8229/8585307372_e53eaed83e_z.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
We all got this dessert because the other two options weren't as appealing. The Greek yogurt was a soothing not-so-sweet end.<br />
<br />
With all the supplements, the great lunch deal ended up being less of a deal, but lunch at <a href="http://www.cosmopolitanlasvegas.com/taste/restaurant-collection/estiatorio-milos.aspx" target="_blank">Estiatorio Milos</a> is still more affordable than dinner, so I was quite pleased.</div>

If you're starting a diet soon, I highly recommend you go to <a href="http://beerbellyla.com/" target="_blank">Beer Belly</a>. Not for your diet. For your last hurrah before your diet.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8578587635/" title="beer belly 028a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="beer belly 028a" height="331" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8105/8578587635_5f4315b7e3.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8578588551/" title="beer belly 025a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="beer belly 025a" height="331" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8520/8578588551_4686b40f68.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8579693048/" title="beer belly 005a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="beer belly 005a" height="640" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8372/8579693048_993abb2233_z.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
I imagine the beer here is really good. I imagine because I can't actually tell you because I don't drink beer, but I did have a great spicy Blenheim ginger ale ($3).<br />
<br />
Death by Duck -- duck fat fries, duck skin cracklins, duck confit, raspberry mustard ($8).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8579692662/" title="beer belly 008a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="beer belly 008a" height="640" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8523/8579692662_a7de8e1ae6_z.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
A damn good way to die. Freakishly delicious. Even non-duck-loving <a href="http://obsessedwithpink.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Amber</a> was a fan!<br />
<br />
Buttermilk fried chicken -- breast strips, roasted corn aioli ($9).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8579692098/" title="beer belly 011a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="beer belly 011a" height="640" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8378/8579692098_d44ceb7f25_z.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
While the rest of us were quacking, <a href="http://choudown.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Eleana</a> cried, "Give chicken a chance!" And, boy, were we glad we did.<br />
<br />
The Duck French Dip -- sage-roasted duck breast, Provolone, duck-skin horseradish aioli, duck au jus, pickled onions ($14).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8578590647/" title="beer belly 015a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="beer belly 015a" height="331" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8232/8578590647_f9b820fe5f.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8578591131/" title="beer belly 013a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="beer belly 013a" height="331" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8367/8578591131_9c5554c68a.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
Sometimes it's the condiments that really make a sandwich. Gold stars for the duck-skin horseradish aioli and the duck au jus!<br />
<br />
The Beer Belly Grilled Cheese -- cheddar, Asiago, Gruyere, goat cheese, applewood bacon, maple syrup ($11).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8578590049/" title="beer belly 018a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="beer belly 018a" height="640" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8230/8578590049_64916890f2_z.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
Maple syrup! Yes, once again, the condiment made the sandwich. What an epic inclusion! At our table, Mercy recognized this first.<br />
<br />
Chipotle and beer-braised short rib -- cheddar puff pastry, roasted short rib jus, dill and onion housemade chips ($15).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8579690160/" title="beer belly 019a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="beer belly 019a" height="640" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8525/8579690160_de83cd27d6_z.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
Hard to believe that this dish came from a street-art-adorned Koreatown structure and not a fancy-schmancy Beverly Hills establishment.<br />
<br />
Deep-fried mint Oreos, Nutella, strawberry puree, whipped cream, strawberry sugar, chocolate chip ice cream ($5).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8579689568/" title="beer belly 023a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="beer belly 023a" height="331" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8380/8579689568_a423e4e77c.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
This tasted like the county fair. I like the county fair.<br />
<br />
Next time I want to try the deep-fried cheddar with beer and bacon batter and jalapeño aioli. And pork belly chips. And steak and garlic truffle fries. And pizza mac 'n' cheese. And a fried Twinkie.</div>

The space and menu are clean and simple, too. Even so, it was hard to order because <a href="http://insomniaceatsfoodmostlyplants.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">insomniac</a> and I wanted to eat everything at this latest addition to <a href="http://www.mozzarestaurantgroup.com/" target="_blank">the Mozza empire</a>.<br />
<br />
It's tough being us.<br />
<br />
Hot fresh bread (complimentary) and affetati misti ($24).<br />

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8576114961/" title="chi spacca 014a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="chi spacca 014a" height="331" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8109/8576114961_c5d1cfea63.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>

What is that vowel-filled tongue-twister up there? It's a house-cured meat paradise -- bacon tenderloin pate, pork butter, tellicherry pepper salami, fennel salami, speck, and capocollo. Meat. Paradise.<br />
<br />
Baby Romanesco cauliflower, crushed lemon bagna cauda ($12).<br />

More kids would eat their vegetables if their vegetables were like this.<br />
<br />
Lamb neck stracotto ($27).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8577212526/" title="chi spacca 027a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="chi spacca 027a" height="331" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8508/8577212526_e0283c0ba1.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
My fave of the night. Tender and luscious. <a href="http://insomniaceatsfoodmostlyplants.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">insomniac</a> took leftovers home in a box. Then she ate them as soon as she walked through the door. So much for leftovers.<br />
<br />
Red wattle pork "segreto" ($24). Under a bed of greens. And then revealed.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8577212072/" title="chi spacca 030a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="chi spacca 030a" height="331" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8391/8577212072_0295d279ec.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>

Loved the rub on this. Smoky. Like licking a grill. In a good way.<br />
<br />
Warm squash blossoms ripiene, ricotta, tomato vinaigrette ($12).<br />

A delightful mix of garden and dairy.<br />
<br />
Dario's olive oil rosemary cake ($9).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">

Enjoyable end with an orange zest and limoncello curd. Mmm.<br />

I break my hiatus for you, <a href="http://choudown.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Eleana</a>!<br />
<br />
Here's our experience at the bar at <a href="http://www.bestiala.com/" target="_blank">Bestia</a> tonight. (Yeah, reservations are hard to get, so arrive early and snag a stool if you're not a lucky duck who scored a table.)<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8573281837/" title="047a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="047a" height="331" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8366/8573281837_013333ce2c.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8573281265/" title="048a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="048a" height="331" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8228/8573281265_89d3fe02a6.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8573285631/" title="025a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="025a" height="331" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8376/8573285631_b7712cbffd.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8573289907/" title="021a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="021a" height="640" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8529/8573289907_a202bef649_z.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
I told our friendly bartender that I like Moscow Mules and Dark and Stormies (basically anything gingery), so she crafted me a lovely ginger and rye drink. Nice combo! Bespoke cocktails cost $12.<br />
<br />
Margherita pizza -- San Marzano tomatoes, mozzarella, basil, olive oil, sea salt ($15).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8573285127/" title="027a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="027a" height="331" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8232/8573285127_7701024649.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
John, our neighbor at the bar, ordered this and insisted that we each try a slice while he waited for his friend to arrive. Who are we to turn down free pizza? Light and tasty! Thanks, John!<br />
<br />
Hand-harvested diver scallop crudo, squid ink bottarga, breadcrumbs, chili oil, lemon, scallion ($14).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8574377376/" title="030a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="030a" height="640" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8098/8574377376_e3809f3d79_z.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
Fresh and salty! A bright start to our meal!<br />
<br />
Pan-seared octopus and calamari, fennel, mixed mushrooms, arugula, aged balsamic ($16).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8574376834/" title="035a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="035a" height="331" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8369/8574376834_72c2c24171.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
Awesome. <a href="http://choudown.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Eleana</a> remarked that the octopus was not over-charred as it often is at many restaurants. I agreed. You want octopus and squid well prepared? Order this.<br />
<br />
Cavatelli alla norcina -- ricotta dumplings, housemade pork sausage, black truffles, grana padano ($27).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8574376310/" title="039a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="039a" height="331" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8239/8574376310_f8af9a1c6e.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
This dish was kind of a dream come true -- a punchy, porky, springy, rich, and truffle-y dream come true! We agreed this was the best dish of the night, and it merited its hefty price tag (well, hefty for pasta anyway). Shout-out to my bro for texting me to get this. That guy knows his food. You should trust all three of us on this one.<br />
<br />
Fusilli lunghi al sugo di cinghiale -- hand-rolled pistachio pasta, wild boar ragu, housemade ricotta salata, pistachio oil ($18).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8574375802/" title="040a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="040a" height="331" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8111/8574375802_c22b4470ee.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
Pistachio pasta? I couldn't resist. Pistachio gelato is my favorite gelato. Pistachio macarons are my favorite macarons. How could I not order this? Sadly, while we enjoyed this dish, I couldn't really taste any pistachio. Maybe I wasn't supposed to, but still. I expected something really special, and I didn't get it.<br />
<br />
Coffee and donuts -- spiced chestnut zeppole, simple whipped cream, coffee gelato ($11).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/8574375284/" title="042a by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="042a" height="331" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8506/8574375284_bf18f4052b.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
Hot donuts with milky sides are always a winner. No surprise here. Yummy.<br />

Pat'sWe're not afraid to be the ultimate tourists when we travel. Sure, it's great to go off the beaten path, but, when you're in a place for a really short time, sometimes it's fun to do the expected.<br />
<br />
When you're in Philadelphia, you're expected to visit <a href="http://www.genosteaks.com/" target="_blank">Geno's Steaks</a> and <a href="http://www.patskingofsteaks.com/" target="_blank">Pat's King of Steaks</a>. Most people will agree that they are not the best cheesesteaks in the city, but nobody can deny that they are absolute Philly institutions.<br />
<br />
And, lo and behold! They are right across the street from each other! My friends Laptop and Mrs. Beagle joined us for the challenge. First stop: <a href="http://www.genosteaks.com/" target="_blank">Geno's</a>.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/7981355768/" title="philadelphia 122edit by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="philadelphia 122edit" height="640" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8442/7981355768_182b1e21ea_z.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/7981352579/" title="philadelphia 126edit by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="philadelphia 126edit" height="320" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8446/7981352579_f47ff7cc65_n.jpg" width="212" /></a><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/7981351755/" title="philadelphia 127edit by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="philadelphia 127edit" height="320" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8448/7981351755_aef7978dd0_n.jpg" width="212" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/7981348933/" title="philadelphia 137edit by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="philadelphia 137edit" height="640" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8031/7981348933_2607831e7f_z.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/7981349547/" title="philadelphia 135edit by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="philadelphia 135edit" height="640" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8461/7981349547_10dc8fc276_z.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
Luckily, I spoke perfect English when ordering.<br />
<br />
Whiz wit ($9.00).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/7981353298/" title="philadelphia 129edit by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="philadelphia 129edit" height="640" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8455/7981353298_6aca722b6b_z.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
That's abbreviated-speak for a cheesesteak with Cheez Whiz with onions. The sliced steak was quite bland.<br />
<br />
Cheese fries ($5.00).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/7981352594/" title="philadelphia 130edit by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="philadelphia 130edit" height="640" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8038/7981352594_e5a59fdc96_z.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
Much better than the cheesesteak but still nothing special at all.<br />
<br />
Would <a href="http://www.patskingofsteaks.com/" target="_blank">Pat's</a> disappoint, too?<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/7981354027/" title="philadelphia 119edit by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="philadelphia 119edit" height="640" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8315/7981354027_ff57940a37_z.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/7981349230/" title="philadelphia 142edit by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="philadelphia 142edit" height="640" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8440/7981349230_7201e708fc_z.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
Our first impression of <a href="http://www.patskingofsteaks.com/" target="_blank">Pat's</a> was instantly better. Instead of being bombarded with scary Speak English signs and stickers, we were greeted with friendly, hearty hellos from several employees, not to mention the instructions clearly posted were pretty helpful.<br />
<br />
Whiz wit ($9.50).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/7981349888/" title="philadelphia 141edit by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="philadelphia 141edit" height="640" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8177/7981349888_e47c3cfdd4_z.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
When you're conducting a cheesesteak challenge, you have to order exactly the same thing! While <a href="http://www.patskingofsteaks.com/" target="_blank">Pat's</a> doesn't compare at all to the magnificent <a href="http://www.weezermonkey.com/2012/09/superb-sandwiches-johns-roast-pork.html" target="_blank">John's Roast Pork</a>, this sandwich completely kicked the <a href="http://www.genosteaks.com/" target="_blank">Geno's</a> sandwich's ass. It wasn't even a contest. The chopped steak made all the difference -- more char, more flavor, more everything.<br />
<br />
Cheese fries ($5.50).<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/7981344701/" title="philadelphia 149edit by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="philadelphia 149edit" height="640" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8035/7981344701_e4e7480aa3_z.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
Again, better than <a href="http://www.genosteaks.com/" target="_blank">Geno's</a>. More crisp!<br />
<br />
Bonus sandwich pic.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/7981344117/" title="philadelphia 152edit by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="philadelphia 152edit" height="640" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8295/7981344117_11d667e522_z.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
Mr. Beagle got Provolone. Mmm. Provolone.<br />
<br />
It was an easy choice between these two historic cheesesteak competitors. Team <a href="http://www.patskingofsteaks.com/" target="_blank">Pat's</a>!<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/weezermonkey/7981344206/" title="philadelphia 155b by weezermonkey, on Flickr"><img alt="philadelphia 155b" height="331" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8312/7981344206_ca0302f40a.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
But, really, the Monkeys are Team <a href="http://www.weezermonkey.com/2012/09/superb-sandwiches-johns-roast-pork.html" target="_blank">John's Roast Pork</a>. That is, until we return and sample some more cheesesteaks the next time we're in Philadelphia.weezermonkeyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08023289768556784443noreply@blogger.com13
