Cute Crepe Corner: Box Cafe

Box Cafe (2117 Sawtelle Blvd., Los Angeles) replaced the old crepe nazi. The crepes are decent although not outstanding. The experience, however, is much improved without the mean guy.

Fast, Casual, Yet So Very French: La Bretagne Creperie

If you want a tasty, quick, no-frills lunch during your Vancouver sightseeing, head to La Bretagne Creperie (795 Jervis Street, Vancouver).

All crepes are made to order. For each savory crepe on the menu, you have your choice of a crepe froment (organic white flour) or galette sarazin (organic buckwheat flour). We opted for the galettes.

French onion soup (CAN $6.25).

Excellent version of this classic comfort food. Highly recommend.

Apple, cinnamon, Swiss cheese crepe (CAN $6.95). Add sausages (CAN $2.75).

Because we knew we were going to skip dessert, we got one of the sweeter savory crepes. Paired with the sausages, this felt like a decadent late breakfast. The galette was thin and delicate but strong enough to hold the generous contents. No sogginess here!

Salardaise crepe -- duck confit, onion, potato, white wine sauce (CAN $13.20).

While this photo may look unappetizing to many, this makes me say yum, yum, yum. The rich duck confit was such a luscious treat in the middle of the day.

I wouldn't say La Bretagne Creperie is a destination restaurant, but it is certainly worth a stop if you're in the area. We left quite happy.

Dining Solo at Payard

I don't like eating alone. For me, eating is a very social experience. Food is not simply something I ingest for nourishment. It's a component of culinary conversation. I like to eat and talk and talk about eating.

After I had a glorious free facial at Qua, I sought a light lunch at my beloved Payard, which, as I've noted before, is an excellent place to brunch. Mr. Monkey was still playing golf, so I intended to do a grab-and-go from the counter and nosh upstairs in my room. But, as I exited the restaurant, a small table opened up.

I sat down. And I ate alone.

Eating alone in Vegas is pretty fun. It's not quiet. It's not slow. Slot machines whir and ding and clank. Drunk people slur and sing and stank.

And, yes, I know that should be "stink," but "stink" doesn't rhyme with "clank." Give me a little creative liberty here.

Needless to say, sitting and munching and watching the Vegas world go by was entertaining.

For $15.15 (which was ultimately comped by the hotel), I had a simple ham, egg, and cheese buckwheat crepe, mixed greens, and cafe au lait.

For completely free, I had a slice of The Middle America Meets Outrageous Decadence Show.

Both were rather satisfying.

Crazy for Crepes: Jack 'n' Jill's Too

Jack 'n' Jill's Too, formerly known as Creperie by Jack 'n' Jill's, is pretty awesome for brunch. I haven't experienced anything bad here yet.

Well, not exactly. There was a bad woman at the table next to us. She told us to be quiet.

We didn't like her. But she's probably not at Jack 'n' Jill's Too every day, so you should totally go.

Special thanks to @CurryClaire for pretending to pose for a picture. Taking fake photos is a specialty of mine, but it requires a good partner in crime.

Honey With My Honey

We went to San Francisco again for Evil Twin's wedding (yes, he knows I call him Evil Twin; he calls me Evil Twin, too). We started our day at Honey Honey Cafe & Crepery [sic].

The place is perpetually packed.

Order at the counter, and wait for service at your table.

We sat at one of the few sidewalk tables.

Chicken pesto crepe: swiss, tomato, garlic, pesto, fresh basil, chicken breast ($8.95).
san francisco 032
Not authentic but still effing delicious. The consistency of the crepe was quite lovely, and the cheese was ample. Yum yum yum.

Crabcake sandwich with mayo, lettuce, and tomato ($8.95).
san francisco 030
Sad to say, this was awful. I don't even think it was real crab. It was Krab. Gross.

Strawberry Nutella crepe ($5.95).
san francisco 033
Magical! This turned my frown upside down after the Krab debacle. Happy!

We pricelined Parc 55 for just $72 during one of the busiest weekends of the year.

But the hotel was overbooked! We never made it to an actual room.

They punted us over to the Hotel Nikko with a voucher.

It wasn't the Parc 55, but it was nice enough. We enjoyed our one-night stay.

And here's the reason why the Parc 55 was overbooked -- Gay Pride Weekend!
