The Paper Chase

I am thrilled that Gossip Girl is back (so great last night). I am thrilled that I can watch The Hills online. I am thrilled about all the culinary drama in both Top Chef and Hell's Kitchen. But the show that is thrilling me the most right now is MTV's The Paper, a quasi-documentary of a high school newspaper staff.

[Stop reading now if you'd like to catch up with online episodes. Spoilers below!]
Amanda, the newly crowned editor-in-chief, is so geeky and ridiculous that you can't stop gawking at her. She is simultaneously uncomfortable and confident. I don't know if I love her or hate her yet. All I know is that I can't get enough of her.

And, personally, I can't help but relate to poor Alex, the managing editor who lost the head honcho position to crazy Amanda. I, too, was managing editor in high school, and I was absolutely crushed when I didn't get EIC.

A puddle of tears in a rainstorm.

For days.

I winced as Alex winced when he read the list of new editors. Daggers.

I highly recommend this show if you had anything at all to do with your high school newspaper. Or yearbook. Or any high school club really. The Paper is totally bringing back memories for me, and the kids are real kids, which is refreshing. I can't wait to see how the semester unfolds.

  5. I know exactly what you mean about the girl. I feel like I should be rooting for her and then she does something to make me want to hate her.

  7. I was co-editor-in-chief of our Yearbook. Awesomeness. My co-editor and I totally took advantage of our position of power.

  9. I agree, it is refreshing to see high schoolers that act like high schoolers should act (?) instead of skanky HC + L blowhards (a la LB).

  12. I caught the paper since it's on after the hills...(eeks, i know).

But I thought it was so mean of those kids to call her while she's working hard, they're eating, and making fun of her the whole time on speaker! Kids can be so cruel.

  13. I wanted to be a journalist from the age of 10 to 17. And then I was EIC of my high school paper. The experience killed the dream. My staff used to call me "Hitler", and on days they were being nicer, "Stalin."

I'm a little afraid to watch this show. It might bring back too many painful memories. Good times. Good times indeed.

  14. i was on yearbook in jr. high, and a co-editor. i didn't even touch my high school one with a ten-foot pole because of the female friends that were involved...needless drama.
